What is Nail Surgery?
Nail Surgery is the removal of either part of or all of a nail under local anaesthetic. It is a quick and effective long-term solution to many painful nail conditions. It is nearly always carried out in conjunction with the chemical removal of the nail bed, to prevent re-growth and any possible recurrence of the original condition.

What is involved?
Nail Surgery is carried out at a time convenient to both you and the podiatrist, usually within a few days once an assessment has been carried out to ensure that this is appropriate for you. A local anaesthetic is used to ensure that the area is completely numb and the required amount of nail gently lifted off (no stitching is required and there is generally no bleeding). A chemical is then usually used to prevent the nail growing back and a large dressing applied.

Approximately one hour of your time is required, with a follow-up appointment the following day and then again the following week, with a final appointment planned about 3-4 weeks from your operation. You are advised to ensure that you can be accompanied /driven home and will be encouraged to rest for the first 24hrs after your operation. Analgesics are sometimes required within the first few hours post-operatively. Upon healing, you should be left with a pain free toe.
